Pros and Cons of Lumineers

A great deal of patients who visit our dental office in Fairfield ask about Lumineers versus porcelain veneers.

Although Dr Mariana Conant, a cosmetic dentist, prefers porcelain veneers to Lumineers in most cases, there are some good candidates for the Lumineer or thin veneer procedure.

Determining which procedure best suits the patient is done through a consultation with a dentist who specializes in cosmetic dentistry. Patients who tend to be good candidates for Lumineers have their natural teeth intact and their teeth are fairly white and straight.

"If the underlying color of the teeth is yellowish to orange-brown, that discoloration may still show through the thin layer of Lumineers,"

Also Patients with poor bites or clench their teeth are not good Lumineers candidates because applying Lumineers to the tooth surface slightly increases the biting surface in the mouth, and that can change the patient's bite pattern and with people who clench this can be a problem because their existing bite could fracture the edges of the Lumineers by grinding or clenching.

When it comes to placing thin porcelain veneers without tooth preparation this makes smile esthetics more difficult.

By adding just 0.3 millimeter of porcelain to the thickness of a tooth gives them a bulky look and feel.

They also have to be made close to 2 millimeters longer, The length will effect the bite so the veneer will need to be adjusted on the edges which will give the tooth an un-natural rounded look. When looking at pictures of teeth you will be hard presses to see a case where this was a good look for a patient.

Remember When considering the benefits of porcelain veneers over Lumineers, the cosmetic dentist's artistic ability, preparation procedure and overall experience is of utmost importance

One common misperception is that porcelain veneers always result in tooth sensitivity. "If done properly, there should be no sensitivity,"

Porcelain veneers produce more natural looking teeth, and the contour is better around the gum line. It's important when the doctor is prepping for veneers, that they only add an amount of porcelain that mirrors the amount of natural tooth that was removed, resulting in a natural look.

Before undergoing either procedure, it is important to have proper records taken, which include, but are not limited to x-rays, preoperative impressions and bite analysis. Patients also should undergo a thorough consultation with a well-respected cosmetic dentist to go over the options.
